First loved by skaters, then by rebels and freethinkers all over the world, the Era shoe is a throwback option that transcends its time, always rising to the moment. Here’s what you need to know about one of Vans’ low-top legends, including the history, fit, and tips for styling.

What Is the Vans Era?

The Vans Era was originally made as a skateboarding shoe, but its classic, rebellious looks can thrive in almost any setting. It’s a sturdy low-top silhouette made from vulcanized rubber and durable canvas. Though its aesthetics are simple and streamlined, it’s fitted with a little extra padding in the collar for added support. On the back heel, you’ll find our legendary Off the Wall® logo, where it first appeared.

This shoe is available today in a Classic build for timeless style and street-ready comfort, Skate for even more board-focused features, a Wafflecup build with our toughest outsole reinforced by DuraCap™ underlay, and an OTW option that gives you a worn-in look right away.

A variety of colorways help this bold silhouette stand out even more. Shop Vans Customs for a build that’s 100% personal.

The History of the Era Shoe

When the Vans Authentic hit the streets of Southern in 1966, it was known as the Style 44 Deck Shoe. Over time, skaters caught on to the fact that its rubber outsole was just as good for gripping a board. A few years after the Authentic burst onto the skate scene, Vans launched the Era: the brand’s first shoe designed specifically for skateboarding.

Launched in 1976, it was designed by Vans skate legends Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, members of the Z-Boys, who joined Vans Skate Team in 1977. From that moment, the style inspired a skateboarding generation and made its way from the underground to high fashion and back again.

Era vs. Authentic Shoes: What’s the Difference?

The Era and the Authentic are each iconic Vans models that bring a free-spirited, creative, and rebellious mood to any outfit. Both are low-top silhouettes with waffle outsoles for great grip, but the Era has a padded collar for extra comfort and a reinforced heel.

For this reason, it may be preferable to the Authentic for die-hard skaters. It also comes in skate-specific builds with reinforced outsoles and other board-focused features. If you’re not a skateboarder, the question comes down to fit, and the Eras will be snugger, thanks to a bit more padding. For maximum minimalism, choose the Authentic style.

How Does the Era Shoe Fit?

This silhouette is low, so your ankles will feel free. The canvas upper shouldn’t put too much pressure on the top of your foot, and a flat sole should feel sturdy as you step, without any rub or shift. There’s also a little more padding on the collar than the more minimal Authentic, so the shoe will be quite soft and snug.

Styling Tips for Your Favorite Pair of Vans

Use these style tips for making outfits with this classic low-top style:

  • Keep it simple: Each pair has a stylish, clean look that doesn’t need a lot of busyness in your outfit. Keep your look laid back with a simple men’s or women’s t-shirt.
  • Show the ankle: With a low-top shoe, see how you like a denim or cotton pant that cuts just above the ankle. Shorts, however high or low, will look great with your favorite shoes.
  • Any socks can work: No-show socks can keep a low-top shoe extra clean. But high socks or ankle-length socks can also go well with a lot of outfits.
  • Color-coordinate: Try to let your Vans footwear take the lead in the colors of your outfit. Going for men’s or women’s pants that don’t contrast too heavily, with neutral blues, blacks, beiges, and browns, can be a good idea.
