Vans Checkerboard
Originally adopted by BMX riders in the early '80s, Checkerboard evolved into an undeniable Vans icon. First becoming a pop culture icon thanks to Jeff Spicoli and his black-and-white Checkerboard Slip-Ons in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The bold and instantly recognizable pattern stands as a symbol of creativity and cultural connection. Iconic. Versatile. And Off The Wall forever.

Common Questions
The iconic Vans Checkerboard print made its debut in 1977 with the launch of the classic Slip-On. Steve, son of Vans founder Paul Van Doren, noticed skaters customizing their sneakers with checkerboard patterns. So, Paul decided to print it right onto the canvas Slip-Ons. Loved by skaters, embraced by the ska scene, and immortalized in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, the Checkerboard became a pop culture icon—and a permanent part of Vans history.
