What is considered a youth shoe size?

Youth shoe sizes typically refer to sizes that fit children between 8 and 13 years. In terms of numerical sizing, Big Kid sizes usually range from size 3.5 to size 7. These sizes are a step up from little kids' shoe sizes and are designed to accommodate growing feet as children transition into their teenage years. This category includes shoes for both boys and girls, often labeled as " Big Kid" sizes in some brands.

What's the difference between "Children" and "Youth" sizes?

"Children" or "C" sizes are made for younger kids, typically from infancy up to around age 8, with sizes ranging from 1C to 13.5C. In contrast, "Youth" or "Y" sizes are grade school shoes for older kids, usually aged 8-13, and range from 1Y to 7Y, bridging the gap between child and adult shoe sizes. While a 7Y and a men's 7 share the same length, men's shoes are built on a different last, resulting in a different fit that’s better suited for adult feet.

How do you measure youth kids for shoes?

To measure your child’s shoe size, use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the length of their foot from the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Ensure your child is standing on a flat surface with weight evenly distributed on both feet during the measurement. Watch out for any curling of their toes, as this can affect accuracy.

If you use a piece of string, measure it against a ruler afterward. Compare this measurement with the shoe size chart to find the perfect fit. Be sure to measure both feet, as it’s common for one foot to be slightly larger than the other. In such cases, choose the big kids' shoe size that fits the larger foot.

What is the youth shoe size scale?
