Skateboarders have a long history of breaking down barriers. Driven by a common passion, skaters all over the world ignore race, gender, age, nationality, and socio-economic differences and come together to shred. Join us for the screening of two films made by skaters for skaters that highlight how our diverse communities can push for change in the world. Build Ramps Not Walls documents a bi-national crew of skaters of all ages in Mexico that offer a different response to the divisive talk about the wall between the US and Mexico. They build ramps that unite people rather than walls that divide. The Blackboard follows the pioneers of the African American pro skate world as they recount their struggles to break into an industry dominated by the white California surf scene. Facing judgement both at home and in skateparks, they had to defend their passion to skate despite stereotypes.
Film screenings followed by open mic Q&A with cast, producers, and Chicago skate community leaders, followed by DJ + Skate Jam.
