The Vans Hi Standard Lands Successfully in Pyeong Chang
Seoul, South Korea. (February 5, 2018) - Original action sports / lifestyle brand Vans hosted the third annual Hi Standard event in Korea on February 3rd, at the Welli Hilli resort in Pyeong Chang. Well over 100 riders participated in the event, with added support from the Vans global snow team who rode with kids throughout the day. Before the 2018 Olympic Games kicked off, Vans brought together the snow community together for a day of fun and rad’ness in true Van Doren spirit.
Saturday February 3rd started out with almost white-out conditions on the mountain, where the over 100 plus riders battled winds and constant snow during their practice session. The day opened up with pockets of sunshine and blue-sky backdrops as the young and old, male and female riders showed their best on various rail and box events.
This year’s event was even more special through participation of the Vans Global Snow Team who happened to be in town for the Korean premier of the heralded Vans Landline Movie. The Vans Snow Team rode side by side with the locals, including Pat Moore, Darrel Mathes, Jake Kuzyk, Dan Liedahl and Sam Taxwood.
The Hi Standard opened with Tricks for Cash on the box obstacle, and was divided into two groups, Old Boy (OB) and Young Boy (YB), during which riders fiercely competed for Van Doren dollars. Next was the Van Doren Best Trick on the rail section, and Im San from YB and Choi Sunong from OB were honored with winning titles. Finally, in the Big Air contest, both YB and OB riders pushed hard against winds to launch over the 12-meter kicker for more Van Doren dollars.
At the end of the day, top dollars and a Most Improved award was given to Vans Korea Snow Team rider Choi Jun-gyu, who impressed judges with lofty 540’s over the kicker and solid rail tricks. Taking MVP glory and a trip to the finale event in Tahoe was surprisingly 10-year-old Lee Chae-woon. The youngster rode in every contest section with crowd pleasing maneuvers for someone who only recently turned double digits in age. Look out for Lee Chae-woon as he takes on the competition in the USA!
