Dylan Okurowski wins MVP at Copper Vans Hi-Standard Series at Copper Mountain, Colorado– Stop Eight Recap
The Woodward Snowpark at Copper Mountain, Colorado hosted the latest stop of the Vans Hi-Standard Series on Sunday, March 4th, with a local showing that brought out tons of camaraderie—and some of the most female shreds the series has ever seen.
Vans pros Brian Skorupski and Zac Marben were on hand calling the tricks and helping give out some of the $2,000 worth of $5-bills for the big air style jams, where riders were awarded cash for stomping the called out tricks with style.
"The Hi-Standard at Copper Mountain was all time," said Skorupski. "The set up was built for every type of rider, giving everyone a chance to showcase their riding."
Marben agreed and added, "At the end of the day, every one left with smiles on their faces!"
The fun jams were fun for everyone, including the spectators that braved the high wind gusts and the eventual snowstorm that rolled in at the end of the day. But during those jams, there was one rider that really stood out.
Dylan Okurowski took the coveted title of MVP and won a free trip to Sierra-at-Tahoe on March 17th for the Vans Hi-Standard Series finale with all the other series MVPs. As you could imagine, he was super stoke with his win.
Next up was the Van Doren Rail Best Trick, which was also a jam format, where organizers gave out another $500. Here the setup had three rail features: a down rail, a flat rail and a tubby.
In the 15-and-Unders, Justin Phipps dropped a crazy Footplant Frontside Boardslide 270 Out on the down rail for the $200 win. In the 16-and-Ups, Jason Blose stepped up with a Switch Backside 270 to Boardslide on the same down rail to earn the big cheque of the day: $300. Blose was pushing it so much throughout the jam that he also walked away with the Worst Bail of the Day award.
For the first time in series history, the Most Improved Rider award went to two riders: the father and son team of Van and Phineas Townsend. Not only did they ride together all day, hitting the jumps at the same time, but Van would even lift his son up onto the rails so he could ride the entire length and help him stomp. It was an awesome part of the day for everyone to see.
And like every Vans Hi-Standard stop, the free House of Vans Art Workshop gave every participant a free pair of Vans Classic Slip-Ons to design with the help of local artist Franky Scaglione. Scaglione also designed a giant Vans SK8-Hi, which was raffled off to one lucky winner named Robert Ortiz.
The Series returns to the Great White North this weekend when it hits Mt. Seymour, BC, on March 10th, before the final stop of the winter series at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Saturday, March 17th. Online registration is available for 45 of the 90 spots.
The 2018 Vans Hi-Standard series hit South Korea, China, Finland, the United States and Canada—and at every stop, registration is free. Vans also covers lift tickets and a lunch for all participants and freshly made waffles hot off the irons.
