ASR

Went down to everyones favorite trade show this weekend, wait.. wednesday. Thats right, its only 2 days and in the middle of the week. And its also about an 1/8th the size of what it usually is. But on the way, we stopped off at the Tudski's house, and he has just had another baby! Judah Tudor. Tosh was up playing with his little brother. Then Joel was getting stoked showing us his new array of boards.

After that we headed south for asr. When we arrived on site, Steve Van Doren was cooking up some waffle grip waffles for all who were feeling like a waffle. The Vans booth was packed as usual, the skate ramp was going off with young groms going huge. Russ was there too, talking about how nice Vans stuff is. Then we got some lunch and high-tailed it outta there.

GUDAUSKAS BROTHERS JOIN THE VANS FAMILY

Its Official! Pat, Dane and Tanner – The Talented Surfing Trio Now Represent Vans Apparel, Footwear and Accessories and the Next Generation of Vans’ Southern California Heritage

Everyone at Vans is proud to announce that Patrick, Dane and Tanner Gudauskas, widely regarded as three of surfing’s most talented and promising young surfers, expanded their six-year relationship with the original action sports brand to include apparel and accessories as well as the footwear program they already support. Born and raised in San Clemente, California, 24-year old twins Pat and Dane and Tanner, 21, represent the next generation of Vans’ Southern California heritage and our ever-growing commitment to surfing culture. The Gudauskases will work directly with the Vans design team to bring their creativity to Vans’ boardshort program and our Surfsiders footwear collection.

The Gudauskas brothers, having amassed impressive individual track records traveling and competing around the world, represent an expanding lineage to Vans’ surf program that already includes icons such as Joel Tudor and Nathan Fletcher as well as young Pipeline charger John Florence and aerialist Jason “Ratboy” Collins. They also join a long tradition of family involvement at Vans, starting with the founding Van Doren family in 1966 and continuing to include legendary and influential names such as Fletcher, Wastell, Smith and Florence.

Known throughout the surf world for their positive attitudes and contagious stoke, it has been obvious from the start that Pat, Dane and Tanner fit in perfectly with the Vans team, possessing the skill, competitive mindset, individual pursuit and creative expression that the brand and surf program symbolize.

"We are thrilled that our sons have joined the elite surf team at Vans,” said Tom and Nancy Gudauskas. “Vans has always been one of our favorite companies and they’ve supported the sport and lifestyle of surfing for decades. As the boys pursue a World Championship Title and surf the best and most challenging waves in the world, it is wholeheartedly exciting to know they will be partners with Vans.”

“The Gudauskas brothers’ partnership with Vans signals another major step forward in our progressive role in surfing,” said Vans’ VP of Marketing Doug Palladini. “That surfers of their caliber, with futures as bright as Pat, Dane and Tanner’s, would choose Vans as their best path speaks volumes about just how far we have come and what the coming years portend.”

As Pat and Tanner gear up for their first year on the WCT in 2010, Dane is set to embark on some exploratory big wave surfing and will be competing in 6-Star Prime Events, continuing to move up towards WCT qualification.

Pat, Dane and Tanner join surfers Joel Tudor, Dylan Graves and Russell Smith on Vans apparel team, along with skaters Anthony Van Engelen, Johnny Laytonand Andrew Allen.

USA takes Bronze - ISA World Championships

Words of USA head coach Ian Cairns:
With 12 of the best under 18 American surfers on the plane to Piha, NZ, I was confident that we had a USA Junior Team with the skills to win a gold medal. Our main rivals have traditionally been Australia, Hawaii, South Africa and France and I was keen to improve on the 2009 fourth place finish. The Quiksilver ISA World Juniors is a long and grueling event and day seven was not kind to the America team -- by day's end we lost six surfers to tough heats and we had dropped behind Australia and Hawaii in the overall standings. To win gold, Team USA would need to win in the Women's and take first and second in the U16 Men's. Day eight would be dramatic.

In the end it was Lakey Peterson with a fourth in the Women's Final and Jake Halstead with a second in the U16 Men's Final. With those results America finished with the bronze medal closely behind Hawaii and Australia.

For me this event was a great learning experience and we will be back in 2011 with a great, young US team, new strategies and a revitalized effort.

Banzai Lay Day

Got a lay day today at the pipeline pro, but when it does start up, Nathan Fletcher is going up against Alex Gray, Dusty Payne and Sion Milosky in heat #13. Then in heat #15, Dane Gudauskas and Reef Mcintosh take on Ola Eleogram and Joe Tanaka. Watch out guys, I smell something delicious, could it be a little Shake & Bake. So maybe tomorrow? stay tuned and get ready for some world class surfing when the last day of the Pipeline pro begins.

Today's Highlights from the Banzai Pipeline

It was a good day, we saw plenty of awesome action today, Reef advanced through dominating his heat with one of his patented late-drop-to-rail-grab-to-let-go-and-stand-straight-up-in-the-barrel deals to nail the highest wave score of the morning. “I was out there just like any other day, just trying to get a few good ones,” he said after his heat. John John prevailed as well, scoring high, and making it look easy. Kalani Chapman had the quote of the morning after dropping in on David Giddings, “I wasn’t gonna let him (Giddings) paddle around me and get away with it, this is my wave and I had to let him know that.” Amazingly, Kalani won the heat even with an interference that negated one of his scores. His luck would run out in his next heat, nevertheless, he still had the line…

Why hasn't Mavs run yet?

Well, for one reason, running the event takes a majority vote from all 24 competitors. And the swells that did come in, were on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and they don't run the contest over those holidays. Here's Pat Gudauskas dropping in!

Volcom Pipeline Pro

Pipeline is the Mecca of the surfing world, and it is at this legendary location that Volcom is proud to announce their first ever ASP event: The Volcom Pipeline Pro, a WQS 5-star event running with a waiting period from January 23rd – February 5th, 2010.

Volcom has been deeply rooted on the North Shore since the early 1990's. It all started with their first team houses at Turtle Bay, then Rocky Point, then V-Land, and Sunset - until finally settling permanently at their dual beachfront locations directly in front of the Banzai Pipeline.

"To have our own contest in front of the Volcom Pipe Houses is truly amazing," says Volcom Founder and CEO, Richard Woolcott. "I think it's going to be a great event for everyone; the surfers, the spectators and the community. This is something I never would have imagined when starting Volcom... It really is a dream come true."

The Volcom Pipeline Pro will feature a prize purse of US $120,000 and be a great opportunity for locals to get much needed WQS and Triple Crown points.

"We're super pumped to host an event at Pipeline," says Troy Eckert, VP of Marketing. "This is the place that separates the men from the boys, and we're all very honored to be involved at this level. I'm glad that we are able to step in and support the Hawaiian surfing community."

The crowds here in Hawaii have calmed down since everyone has left after the Triple Crown. Tyler & Russell Smith, and Ratboy had a session down at Off The Wall today. Beers were cracked as early as 10am, and lunches were provided to all the players, as well as custom Vans Golf shoes. All the big names came out for the tournament, including Kelly Slater. It was a scramble style gameplay, each group took the best ball in play, there was also a longest drive contest and closest to the pin. The Ross Williams foursome won with an outstanding -15! Jason "Ratboy" Collins, Dana Mesebrink, Dane and Tanner Gudauskas won the $1,200 Bud Light Powerball Raffle, and donated their earnings to Pancho Sullivan for his daughters medical bills. Big thanks to the Patacchias!

We want to extend a huge THANKS from everyone at Vans to Fred Patacchia and his family for all their hospitality. Fred is one of the original north shore representatives of our generation. Since we have been here in Hawaii they've been generous enough to open up their home for us, and brought by more than enough Bud Light to keep the boys satisfied. They truly embody the aloha spirit.

Turtle Bay

While the waves were pumping here on the north shore, everywhere was too big and messy, so how bout a round of golf with Dylan Graves and his pal Ale. We drove up to Turtle Bay, and hit the Arnold Palmer course, it's a gorgeous course, and maintained quite well, and since the north shore is so small already, your always likely to run into someone you know. Placed adjacent with the beach, its always nice to feel that ocean breeze while your teeing off. Definitely hit up this course next time your on Oahu. Vans Surf Team has many avid golfers: Dylan Graves, Ratboy, Nelly, Reef Mcintosh, Timmy Reyes, Gudang Bros, so be on the lookout next time your at the course!

The After Show

Another video short for you all of the Gudangs following their heat in which Tanner accumulated enough points for the WCT. This is the After Show with Jarrad Howse and Roy Powers!

The Eddie

Waimea Bay, HAWAII, December 4, 2009
In statements fitting of the 25th anniversary of The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, fueled by Monster Energy, Contest Director George Downing and Aikau's brother Clyde stunned the gathered audience today when they announced that the event would run within the week. All forecasts point towards one of the largest swells to hit Hawaii in decades. The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is an ASP specialty sanctioned event.

"Seven, eight or nine," said Downing to an initially bewildered crowd. "It's gonna happen one of those days." Downing was referring to Monday, December 7, or Tuesday the 8th or Wednesday the 9th.

Today's ceremony was an overwhelming tribute, complete with the original Hokule'a voyaging canoe in Waimea Bay in the midst of a 15- to 18-foot swell. The Hokule'a is a symbol of great Hawaiian pride; a traditional double-hulled vessel that represents the original Polynesian voyage to the Hawaiian islands. It is also the same boat from which Aikau paddled for assistance in 1978, never to be seen again. Hokule'a had capsized in heavy seas in the Moloka'i Channel, injuring crew, en-route to Tahiti.

Clyde Aikau, winner of the 1987 Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, today led the paddle-out of this year's official Invitees and Alternates. Instead of gracing the lineup as they usually do, they circled the Hokule'a and paid respects to Aikau, joined by some of Eddie's original crewmates on the vessel he loved so dearly.

Tanner Gudauskas: Welcome to the WCT!

Thats right! Today Tanner Gudauskas racked up enough points to earn a spot on the WCT. Tanner wasn't given the wildcard at the O'NEILL Word Cup of Surfing, ( weird, cuz he's an O'Neill team rider ) so he had to make it all on his own from heat # 1. Heat after heat, Tanner was on a rampage, and in the round of 32 found himself in a heat with his two brothers, what a coincidence? good news for Tanner. Since older brother Pat had already secured his spot on the WCT, him and Dane helped out little bro with some of the better waves that heat. Mason Ho was also in that heat, taking 1st place, and Tanner took 2nd. We congratulate you Tanner! and good luck tomorrow in the quarter finals, and on the WCT next year!!!

Dane and Tanner both advanced today into the round of 64. PHANTOMS

The waves got massive last night, making Sunset too big to run the contest. Lots of guys decided to go paddle into some monsters up at Phantoms. Timmy Reyes pulled down his 9'8 for the first time this season. This board was originally shaped for Shane Dorian, who didn't seem to like it very much, then given to Tim ( who is psyched on it ).

Alana Blanchard Wins Womens Reef Hawaiian Pro!

The Vans Hawaiian Pro went smoothly today for the women's competition. 19 year old Alana Blanchard came out on top, alongside Stephanie Gilmore in 2nd, Sofia Mulanovich in 3rd and Rebecca Woods in 4th (whom in the semi-finals shared a wave with a fish) The waves seemed to be getting smaller throughout the day, but hopefully we'll get a surge tonight and we can run the mens in the morning.

Hill of Escape - Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau

Wrapping up our second lay day here on the north shore. Here's a look at this evenings sunset overlooking Waimea Bay in Pupukea. This well-preserved heiau (temple) is the largest on O'ahu covering over 5-acres and consisting of three adjoining enclosures measuring 575 feet by 170 feet. This was considered a powerful place for the kahuna and one of two places where wives of the ancient chiefs gave birth.

Nelscott Reef is the perfect tow in wave. Long rides with wide open faces allow for high performance surfing like no where else on the planet. With no major obstacles, like cliffs or rocks, and 1/2 mile of deep channel before the neck breaking beach break, Nelscott is all about sick moves and long rides on huge waves. Good luck to Tyler and Russell Smith competing as a team!

California Coastal Cleanup Day - Saturday, Sept. 19th

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. In 2008, more than 70,000 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,600,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. California Coastal Cleanup Day has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 13 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by The Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year. Check for more details and Cleanup locations nearest you.

Pat Gudauskas Finishes Second at ASP 6-Star PRIME Srilankan Airlines Pro

Congrats to team rider Patrick Gudauskas who finished runner up in an epic final despite posting a perfect 10-point-ride in an attempt to overtake the young Aussie, Owen Wright. The talented regular-footer was narrowly defeated in the high scoring Final by a score of 19.23 to 18.93.

“You know, I feel like I’ve won the event even though I lost," Gudauskas said. "It was just such an amazing event and incredible Final to surf in and I’m really stoked to have pulled those aerials. I think surfing’s heading to exciting places with these moves and I’m fully pumped for the rest of the year.”

The heroic effort by Gudauskas throughout the event will play an integral role in the Orange County native’s campaign towards qualification for the 2010 ASP World Tour. His second place finish in the event launched him into the No. 7 spot amongst his international competitors.

Pat Gudauskas Makes Surfing History!

Pat scored a perfect 10 at the SriLankan Airlines Pro when he executed the "rodeo clown." This is the first time the 540 inverted flip has ever been done in a high level ASP event! The maneuvre sent Pat to first in his heat, advancing him to compete against the final 16 surfers in the event. Congrats Pat and good luck in the rest of the contest!

Never Quit Beach Fest In Florida

The event went down on May 31st, with Vans team rider Karina Petroni in Jacksonville Beach, FL. If you weren't there, the festivities were endless: The waves were perfect, it was a perfect sunny day, there were around 500 runners for a 5k, the most ever, by over double, for a first event. 3 surfing classes were totally full. Each person was taught for over an hour and a half. Several news casters covered the event as well as several newspapers. Channel Island surfboards formed a bridge to make up the finish line. Jets flew in to start off the race and did several passes. There was unlimited food and drinks for everyone. (The New Multi Grain Pizza Hut Pizza's, Tacu Lu, Tropical Smoothie, Fire House Subs, SoBe and so much more)

The lifeguards taught basic CPR, there was free massages, free health screenings, Jaguar Cheerleaders signing autographs, Jaguar players playing football with the kids,Two Navy Obstacle courses, Photographers shooting every runner and surfer so everyone could have an image of themselves participating. Free temporary tattoos,
and so much more! Everyone agreed, it was by far the greatest beach event that anyone had ever been to.

Vans Surf Team Update

The team has been busy, after two months of international travel including Tasmania, Western Australia, and South Africa, the Gudauskas Brothers returned home for WQS 6 star-prime at Lowers. Dane and Pat went down in rounds of 64 and 48 so it was up to Tanner to carry on. Tanner made it to the quarters, posting his best result in a 6 star to date, moving him to 15th on the WQS rankings. Tim Reyes returned home for 2 days from a hectic WCT run only to head to Tahati for the next stop where he will be joined by Pat Gudauskas, who received a wildcard into the event, best of luck to Timmy and Pat.

The Florence family has been in Scotland for the cold water 6 star. John John made it though a couple of rounds before losing out in tough conditions, i.e. 45 degree water and inconsistent waves over jagged slab rock.

Galveston Beach Clean Up

Another successful beach clean up in Texas! Thanks for making the earth that much cleaner!...
"I have officially finished my first Beach Clean-Up Project! We were in Galveston this past weekend, 4-25-09. It was great. We teamed up with Texas A&M at Galveston Surf Club and the Ball Highschool Key Club. We even had a representitive from the Texas General Land Office show up to thank us. We covered a 1/4 mile section of the sea wall/beach. Weather was great. This is a great program. People were so stoked to see us. We had people show up from Houston, which is an hour away, just to help out. The dealer we partnered with, Ohana Surf and Skate, did a awesome job at promoting the event. Thanks for making this happen." -Pfaff

Pat Gudauskas Soon To Compete In WQS At Lower Trestles

ASP is set to host mainland America’s first ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME event when the 6.0 Lowers Pro runs from April 28 through May 2, 2009 at the famed cobblestone reef of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California. Running in conjunction with the esteemed event will be the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior.

Vans Surf Team rider Patrick Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 23, is a local favorite and top seed in the 6.0 Lowers Pro who is looking to capitalize on his familiarity of Lower Trestles in order to work towards his goal of qualification for the ASP World Tour next year. The motivated regular-footer is hoping to claim his share of the ample ratings points on offer in front of his home crowd.

“I'd say I definitely feel like I have an advantage,” Gudauskas said. “ I grew up surfing Lowers and surf there all year long, and I think that will give me that extra edge to hopefully take it to the Final. It's a pretty straight forward wave, so I’m expecting foreigners to still be surfing really good, but there are some little personality traits of Lowers that the locals have surely become familiar with, and can capitalize on it!”

Since 2009 offers an additional 1000 points for ASP 6-Star PRIME events versus regular ASP 6-Star contests, Gudauskas is especially driven to produce a successful result on his home turf. He earned a berth in to the ASP World Tour Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach contest as an alternate and the opportunity to compete alongside the rest of the top 45 surfers on the globe has given even more spark towards his 2009 ASP WQS campaign.

“It was pretty exciting to get into Bells,” Gudauskas said. “In my heat I was a little under experienced on the wave itself, and fell in places that I shouldn't have. It was unfortunate, but the experience was priceless. Seeing the show up close and in person was inspirational. I think that same local edge at Bells can parallel with that at Trestles. It was extremely inspirational to be in the lineup with everyone and it has pushed my levels of froth to new heights, and I can't wait to get here this year!”

The Vans ams are down under for the Jr. Worlds, Andrew Doheny made it through the 1st round before losing his lead in the final seconds to S. African, Klee Strachan. Next and also responsible for one the biggest upsets of the event was 16 year old Leila Hurst, who went down in a close semi-final to Bethany Hamilton, not before taking out Coco Ho in the 3rd round. Coco, in her rookie year on the women's WCT, was a favorite for the World Jrs. Last but not least is Tanner Gudauskas, currently awaiting to face off against Brazil's Alejo Muniz in round 4, Tanner has been on fire surfing extremely well and posting solid scores that left huge gaps between himself and his competitors. Today is the last day of the event so if all goes well Tanner will surf his way through round 4, quarters, semis and on to the finals. For more details and live results go to www.aspworldtour.com

Some say that when the image of George Downing, Wally Froiseth and Buzzy Trent appeared on the front page of a Californian newspaper in 1953, Big Wave Surfing was born. The image began the migration of California surfers to Hawaii in search of these big, warm water waves, in paradise. Capturing that essence is what SurfReel.com's Big Wave Contest is all about. December is your chance to upload and submit the biggest wave riding reels in your video collection. This month it's go big or go home!

SurfReel.com is about connecting the world of surfing, supporting surfers and the surf industry and improving the competitive sport of surfing. One of the many features offered are monthly and annual surfing reel (video) competitions, with winners decided through SurfReel member voting. Unlike other online community and competition sites, SurfReel shares half of its advertising profit with the winners of annual competitions. Additionally, the monthly winners receive swag packages provided by high profile sponsors. Because competitions are online, they are geographically neutral and allow surfers to participate on a global level for a chance at the Annual Purse and Monthly Pot Prizes.

Pat Gudauskas Makes Good Showing In Europe

Patrick Gudauskas was a standout in this week's ASP WQS 5-star event, the Movistar O'neill Pantin Classic, held in Pantin, Spain, finishing fifth overall. Earning a second place finish in the Buondi Billabong pro in Portugal and a fifth place finish at this week's Movistar O'neill Pantin Classic, significantly helping his cause towards qualification for the ASP World Tour. The San Clemente native led the ASP WQS ratings for the first half of the season, but slipped down a few notches to no. 10 after a slow start to the second half of the season. Guduaskas shook off the cobwebs and moved back up to speed, launching himself up to the no. 3 position amongst the world's finest up-and-coming competitors after this week's result in solid six-to-eight foot conditions in Pantin, Spain. "It was pretty fun out there and we are stoked to be through," Gudauskas said. "I got smashed pretty hard on one of the last waves of my heat but it is really good to eventually get bigger waves."

Gudauskas ousted younger brother Tanner Gudauskas in the round of 24 on the way to his quarterfinals berth. Tanner, brother Dane Gudauskas and Nathan Yeomans finished equal 17th overall.

Pat Gudauskas At Lowers

The 2008 Nike 6.0 Pro at Lowers proved to be another step towards the WCT for Vans rider Pat Gudauskas. Pat, seated in the round of 64, surfed his way through world class competition to secure a spot in the final, however with no gas left and a solid heat Pat ended the comp in 4th. While not a win in the lowers pro, making the final put Pat back on top of the WQS and well on his way to his most successful campaign toward the pro tour to date.

Also competing at Lowers were Pat's brothers Dane and Tanner, who battled through a couple of rounds to gain points towards qualification, Ratboy and Shea Lopez also surfed their way through a couple of rounds helping to seat them higher for the up-coming US Open and El Ponto Loco. In the Pro JR. At Lowers Vans newest team member Andrew Doheny made his way to the quarter final where a lack of waves made it difficult to transfer out of a combo situation.
