Vans - the original custom shoe maker - is celebrating the launch of it's new Vans Customs program this summer. In honor of this occasion, we thought we'd let you design your very own pattern to really get the party started. What do you say? If you're the type that doodles all over your shoes, notebook, or anything else you can get your hands on, are an aspiring designer, or just really want to claim to your posse that you have your own Vans shoe pattern... this might be the perfect contest for you! You may submit as many designs as you want. The superstar Vans Design Team will pick the top 20 submissions each week to be posted in the online gallery on vans.com where YOU WILL VOTE on who makes it to the final round. Think of it as American Idol meets shoe design.
There will be 3 rounds in this contest. THE TOP 5 designers chosen each round by votes on vans.com will go on to a final round where YOU WILL DECIDE WHO WINS & gets the cash plus their own pattern available for purchase on the Vans Customs site.

1. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. TO ENTER: Follow the instructions to enter below, including your submission of a design and name. Design and name submissions must be solely your original work; DO NOT COPY THE WORKS OF OTHERS. Open only to U.S residents who, as of July 13, 2009, are 13 years of age or older. To enter go to www.Vans.com and download the Vans pattern template (hyperlink to this). Designs and/or artwork must be illustrations with NO MORE than four colors (shades of colors may vary), metallics or photographs will NOT be accepted. Once you have created your design, upload your Vans Customs design with your name suggestion and email submission to Vanspattern.com. Four rounds for submission. Round 1 includes the following dates: from 11am Pacific Time July 13, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time July 20, 2009. Round 2 includes the following dates: from 11:01am Pacific Time July 20, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time to July 27, 2009. Round 3 includes the following dates: from 11:01am Pacific Time on July 27, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time to August 3, 2009. Contest runs from 11am Pacific Time July 13, 2009 through August 31, 2009 at 11am Pacific Time. Entries must be received by 11am Pacific Time on August 31, 2009 to be included in the contest. Enter as many times as you want. No group or joint entries/design/name submissions will be accepted. In the event of a dispute, entry/design/name submission will be deemed submitted by the Authorized Account Holder of the e-mail account from which the entry/name submission is submitted as of date of entry. Authorized Account Holder means the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. Entry will be disqualified without notice to individual (a) if design and/or name submission is determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion to be inappropriate or unfit for publication (e.g., name submission includes profanity or racist content); (b) if Sponsor, in its sole discretion, determines that the design and/or name submission violates the rights of publicity, privacy, trademark, or copyright of any third party or defames, slanders or libels any third party; (c) if the design and/or name submission is determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion, as being intended to promote a commercial/business enterprise or a charity, political, religious cause or advocates the use of guns/weapons, consumption of drugs or alcohol or any illegal or illicit act; or (d) if the design and/or name submission has been previously published or submitted to another competition or contest. By entering the contest and submitting a design and/or name, entrant (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) grants Sponsor an exclusive, irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, sub licensable license and right to use, perform, exhibit, reproduce, distribute, and/otherwise exploit the design and/or name submission in any manner and in any media now known or hereafter devised and waives any moral rights (droit moral) in name submission; it being understood that nothing herein in any way obligates Sponsor to use the design and/or name submission.
2.Designs as “Work Made For Hire. Designs/artwork As “Work Made For Hire.” By participating, entrant (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) understands and agrees that the design and/or artwork (if applicable) shall each be deemed a “Work Made For Hire” under the copyright laws of the United States, the designs and/or artwork (if applicable) being specially prepared by entrant for Sponsor. If the essay and/or photos and/or poster (if applicable) is deemed not to constitute a “Work Made For Hire,” entrant (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) agrees, in exchange for good and valuable consideration in the amount of $1, to transfer and assign any and all rights, title, and interest in and to the design and/or artwork (if applicable) to Sponsor, including but not limited to the copyright and renewal rights in the design and/or artwork (if applicable), worldwide, and to execute all documents and take all actions deemed necessary by Sponsor to effect, record or perfect such assignment. Vans will use only Grand prize winner’s artwork as a Vans Custom shoe pattern. Vans reserves the right to display the top 20 designs each week for a total of sixty (60) designs on the Vans website for in perpetuity. Entrant (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) hereby waives in favor of Sponsor, all rights of “Droit Moral” or “Moral Rights of Authors” or any similar rights or principles of law that entrant (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) may now or later have to his/her design and/or artwork (if applicable).
3. Winner Selection: One (1) Grand Prize Winner will be selected by Vans design team, from among all eligible entries/name submissions, based on the following criteria: originality, creativity, consistency with Vans brand image, suitability for use an advertising campaign. Vans shall take into account the age of the entrant in evaluating name submissions. In the event of a tie, the Grand Prize winner will be the entry/name submission with the higher/highest score in consistency with Vans brand image. The winner will be announced after August 18, 2009. Round 1 includes the following dates: from 11am Pacific Time July 13, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time July 20, 2009. Round 2 includes the following dates: from 11:01am Pacific Time July 20, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time to July 27, 2009. Round 3 includes the following dates: from 11:01am Pacific Time on July 27, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time to August 3, 2009. Round 4 includes the following dates: from 11:01am Pacific Time on August 3, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time to August 10, 2009. Round 5 includes the following dates: from 11:01am Pacific Time on August 10, 2009 to 11am Pacific Time to August 17, 2009. Vans Design Team will pick the top twenty (20) designs each week during weeks 1-3. From the top twenty (20) designs selected each week, the public will then vote to select the top five (5) designs each week. The top five (5) designs selected during weeks 1-3 will move on to the final round in week 5. Top 3 prize winners will be selected based on public vote. . If won by a minor, winner’s parent or legal guardian may instead be notified in Sponsor’s sole discretion. The winner (or his/her parent/legal guardian, if a minor) will be notified by e-mail approximately 24 hours of their selection. Upon notification, winner (or his/her parent/legal guardian, if a minor) must claim prize by e-mail or by the telephone number provided. If winner (or his/her parent/legal guardian, if a minor) does not respond within 5 days of initial notification, an alternate winner will be selected from among the remaining eligible entries (i.e., the entrant whose name submission had the next highest score). Winner (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) must complete any and all legal documents (including affidavit of eligibility, liability release, publicity release [where lawful], confirmation of grant of rights in name submission to Sponsor) and return them to Vans within five (5) business days after receipt of such documents. Noncompliance will result in disqualification of the winner (with the prize being forfeited without compensation of any kind to winner) and an alternate winner will be selected.
4. 5. NO PRIZE SUBSTITUTION EXCEPT AS PROVIDED HEREIN: Prize is not transferable. Prize is NOT redeemable or exchangeable for cash. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize of equal or greater value should featured prize become unavailable for any reason. Taxes on prize are sole responsibility of winner. The decisions of Vans are final and binding in all matters relating to this Contest. Winner is solely responsible for all unspecified costs/expenses in conjunction with acceptance and use of prize.
6. ELIGIBILITY: Employees of Vans and their respective subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors, sales reps, advertising and promotion agencies and the immediate family members and household members of each are not eligible to participate. Proof of identity must be furnished upon request.
7. GENERAL: By participating, entrants (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) agree to abide by and be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Vans. Winners (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) agree to release Vans, a division of VF Outdoor Inc., and its respective directors, employees, officers and agents including without limitation their advertising and promotion agencies, from any and all liability, loss or damage with respect to the Contest, the awarding, receipt, possession and/or use or misuse of prize or participation in any prize-related activity. By accepting the prize, winner (if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) consents to the use of winner’s name, photo and/or likeness and/or indicia of persona for advertising, trade and promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited. If prize notification letter or prize is returned as undeliverable, the prize will be forfeited without compensation of any kind and awarded to an alternate winner. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or suspend this Contest should virus, bugs or other causes beyond Sponsors' control corrupt the administration, security or proper play of the Contest. In such event, the winner will be selected from among all eligible entries/name submissions received prior to the action taken by Sponsor or otherwise in a manner determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion to be fair, appropriate and consistent with these Official Rules. Notice of such action by Sponsor will be posted on the Contest web site. If Sponsor determines, in its sole discretion, that an individual attempted to tamper or tampered with the web site or the Contest, such individual will be disqualified from the Contest; and, Sponsor may pursue other available legal remedies so as to protect its rights. This Contest is governed by the laws of North Carolina, excluding the conflict of law/choice of law rules of North Carolina or of any other jurisdiction.
