When a group of legends deemed the “Monsters of Skate” are knocking on your door, you better take notice. Thus begins 2012 at AR4T Gallery who will begin the year with a group photography show documenting 20-plus years of skate culture through the lens of its creators. Vans' own, Jay Croft as well as Dave Swift, Grant Brittain, and a few
others bring images that reflect their own personal journeys both in and out of skateboarding. Opening reception is Saturday, January 7th from 7pm - 10pm, and also welcomes music by el mysterioso. “Still Life with Wood” runs January 5th through 22nd at AR4T Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA.
Still Life - quite an accomplishment when the subject is insanely more active than a bowl of fruit. Add the sidekick of wood in the form of a skateboard, mix in what Lee Crane of Boardistan calls “some of the best men to ever point highly polished glass at a rolling slab of maple”, and you have history.
This group is famous for the photos that have shaped the look and feel of skateboarding over the years - and thus the entire world as we know it from fashion to function. But the real testament is how they’ve remained a close knit team the entire time. Each of them has a arsenal of stories that make them the characters they are - silent powerhouses behind the lens, and they all speak freely about leader and luminary, Grant Brittain. “As the 80s turned to the 90s I was fortunate to work alongside J. Grant Brittain and learn about photography and was soon traveling the world taking photographs of skateboarders,” says Dave Swift. Miki Vuckovich: "Like Grant says, be sure to learn all the "rules" of photography before you break them."
AR4T is also proud to have the art of Jay Croft alongside this acclaimed roster. Simply... “this feels better.”
Opening reception on Saturday, Jan. 7th from 7 to 10pm, is free and open to the public. Parking Meters free after 7pm. Works are for sale.
“STILL LIFE WITH WOOD” runs January 5th-22nd
Winter gallery hours: Wed-Sat 3 to 8pm.
AR4T GALLERY, 210 North Coast Hwy. (between Broadway and Cliff), Laguna Beach, CA.
