Posted 11/10/2010 08:45:55 by Chase

Both Vans parks in Orlando, FL and Orange, CA went big with their best trick contests last week. In Orlando it was the mighty outdoor 10-stair, and at The Block it was the infamous Combi-Bowl. Read the rest to see what went down, and don't forget to stop by on the first Friday of every month @ 7pm to show us what you've got. Winner of our monthly best trick contest takes home a pair of Vans and gets a permanent spot on the monthly winner's plaque.

Today was the street skater's dream here at the park...we had our Best Trick contest on the beastly 10-stair outside. There were only a small handful of kids willing to jump down the thing, but the ones that went for it were putting on a serious show.

Jacob Watkins broke the ice with an ollie over the rail. There were two kids fighting for a frontside 180, but Dylan Usma came up with it first. Mike Frese rifled off a few tricks with ease. He started off with a kickflip, then a backside 180, a frontside 5-0 on the hubba, and a nollie 50-50 on the hubba as well. He also tried topping it off with a backside flip at the end, but couldn't pull it off. During the entire contest a gnarly fellow named Anthony Benante was trying to do a pop shuv-it tailgrab...he fought that trick with everything he had...broke his board and kept trying. After his board was in 2 pieces, he borrowed another kid's board and kept going at it. Anthony ended up making the trick and everyone went nuts...he went home bloody and satisfied.

The dude that took the cake was Jacob Watkins. After his ollie over the rail, he lip-slid and also 50-50d it. Doing a 50-50 on that rail is asking to die, and Jacob manhandled it. Big ups to Mr. Watkins, enjoy your free shoes!

Our best trick contest was sick this month! Having it at the Combi brought out a few people that are not usually here for the other best tricks. Shane Alison, a local here, did really well with a no comply around the corner, and also hand plants and BS nose grabs. Noah, another local, did well for himself and held his own with a double judo deal he called a Can Can named after the BMX trick. He also almost landed handplant to FS revert, it looked like he was going to fall backwards off the coping...it was crazy!

Matt Boyster was the one that everyone was scared of, he always has a large bag of tricks to unleash. He had good runs all around, hitting corners and every wall with airs and grinds. He ended up taking the contest when he landed a FS 540 rodeo in the middle of a run! Matt definitely cleaned up shop, and Shane tried to come back with a wild 540 but he couldn't keep it together.

There were a handful of girls that showed up, so 5 minutes before 7pm we had a girl's best trick. We decided to give the girl's winner a free skate session. About five girls competed and gave it their all. Oddly the winner of the contest ended up being Matt's girlfriend Julie Westfall. Julie went Mach 1 through the corners with 50 50s and throwing some amazing FS airs. Jordan Abraham, sister of Brian Abraham...who's a regular best trick winner, tried her shot at beating Julie. Jordan was all over the pool with some good BS airs and 50 50s in the shallow end. Karli was Julie's biggest competition, she may have had a little better run but I felt Julie deserved it cause of the 110% she gave.

In the end Matt took home the shoes and Julie took home the free session. See you next month for the final Best Trick of 2010!
