Hobbies and Talents: Alex is a journalist for the Bishop Alemany High School newspaper, she has played the violin for almost 9 years and plays with the Glendale Youth Orchestra, and of course her passion is art!
Learning the skills: Although drawing on paper was always fun to do, I decided to take my skills further. During freshman year, I was inspired to draw on my white Vans slip-ons. I didn't realize how much attention I was going to get, because when I wore them to school one day, many of my classmates wanted me to draw on theirs as well. It was such a success because not only did I have fun with it, it felt good to see people happy with the transformations I've done with their stuff!
Winning Gold: When I saw the Create on Canvas ad in Teen Vogue, you can't imagine how excited my friends and I were. Since I've been drawing on Vans for a while now, I felt that it was a great opportunity. I gave it a shot.
On January 29, I received a phone call from Vans saying I was the winner. I was very confused and surprised and thought it was a prank call. I just couldn't believe it. I was in my journalism class, so all my friends were there. They basically told the whole world, and it went around the whole school. My family was very proud of me, they even called my relatives in the Philippines. The hype was just insane!
This change of events helped me become more confident in myself and increased my motivation to become a Graphic Designer. The excitement still hasn't left me. It still feels like a dream come true!
