The guys top three looked a lot like last year with only Louie Vito sliding into second place behind Kass and repeat third place finisher Iouri Podlatchokov. Kass, who also won the inaugural Cup Superpipe in 2005, takes home $20,000 for his efforts on Sunday. For the ladies, it was Hight claiming the $11,000 first place prize ahead of Lizzy Beerman and Kjersti Buaas Oestgaard.
Earlier this weekend, Andreas Wiig claimed his second straight Vans Cup Slopestyle title and Cheryl Maas took to the podium for a second day in a row with her win in Slopestyle. Norwegian Wiig, $20,000 richer after his win, continued a string of major Slopestyle titles as he has now won the Vans Cup and X Games each in back-to-back fashion. It took a bit of final run heroics for Wiig as top qualifier Mason Aguirre put the pressure on with his 2nd and final run that had him in the top spot. But Wiig then nailed a Front 1080 to Backside Rodeo 900 on the last run of the day to seal the title. The Dutch Maas, who lives in surf haven Biarritz, took third in Friday night’s Rail Jam and added another $15,000 to her pocket with her win on Saturday.
Chas Guldemond and Molly Aguirre claimed the first two titles at the Vans Cup at Tahoe under the lights Friday night with each taking top honors in the Rail Jam. An open qualifying jam brought a bunch of new names into Rail Jam finals, and Guldemond, a New Hampshire native, led an East Coast contingent of guys who took top spots on the podium after a couple of frenzied of hours under the lights. Guldemond, who had previously taken third in the 2006 Vans Cup Slopestyle, claimed $10,000, while Aguirre, a Minnesota native who now camps in Mammoth Lakes, won $3,000 for her efforts Friday night.
