Snowboarder's Slopestyle Recap

Posted 03/02/2008 12:31:00 by i am vans

The slopestyle course, which centered around a three-jump line, was perfectly aligned. An east wind pushed the riders off the jumps and the sun kept them warm. It was priceless snowboarding conditions. And the riders took every advantage.

Women hopped on the course and took it to the next level. Cheryl Maas blew minds with her backside 720 over the 60-foot third jump. That sick spin put Maas in first and handed her $2,000 for 'Best Trick'. Kjersti Buaas, who placed second, hit some nice frontside spins over the first two booters. Third-place Channelle Sladics brought some real consistency to the course. All the girls really killed it.

The men's final was a spin fest. Mason Aguirre's frontside 1080 truckdriver earned him 'Best Trick' and second place. Robbie Walker's steadiness through all three jumps put him in third. Vans rider Andreas Wiig tallied another win with his signature backside rodeo 900 over the money booter. The men earned every penny of prize money.

The halfpipe competition drops in today. Shredders will try their tricks for another $80,000. Big names like Danny Kass and Molly Aguirre will push the walls with back-to-back combos. The pipe is freshly cut and the riders are pumped. Check back later for a full account of the halfpipe action.

The Vans Cup party was a huge hit. Riders, media crews, and snowboard industry guys swamped the Biltmore Hotel in King's Beach. If it's any indication of how awesome it was, the bartenders couldn't keep up. Trouble Andrew rocked a set. The floor was so packed, the sound could hardly escape the speakers. Big thanks to Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, Vans and Snowboarder Magazine.
