Who would of thought stars can shine under bright lights? Friday night’s rail jam attracted jibbers like a desert oasis draws thirsty wildlife. It was a rail jam jungle, riders climbing around like monkeys and jumping like kangaroos. Those poor rails really got worked.
The down-flat-down rail saw some good action. Lucas Magoon’s backside 180 on was definitely a highlight. Brendan Reis’s smooth spins on and off the rails were clean enough for second place. It was Chas Guldemond who really got the crowd going. His big tricks, gapping the down-flat-down rail and bomb-dropping from a narrow frame, were solid enough for first place.
The women hammered the course. Des Melancon hit a sick backside 180 on backside 180 off the down ledge, good enough for second place. Iris Lazzareschi killed a 50-50 to front board on the down-flat-down ledge. Cheryl Maas, who placed third, hit a super-clean boardslide on the down-flat-down rail. In the end, Molly Aguirre really stood out. Aguirre’s smooth front boards and clean 50-50s on the kinks slid her to first place.
Saturday’s action is centered around the hurly-burly slopestyle course. Riders will take their skill to the 40-50-60 foot jump line, for a chance at $40,000. But, to claim any of it, they’ll have to flow through the jib section and really link their tricks.
Riders practicing on the course were already throwing down. You can expect huge back rodeos, cab spins, jib combos, it will all be there. “The second jump is kind of crazy,†says competitor Marco Grilc. “When there’s no wind it works good.†To find out who keeps the sickest flow through the course stay tuned.
