Isn't life a blast? Just like living in the past...

There's a good chance that some of you reading this will be far too young to understand a few references in the following information stream. Fear not kiddies, much of the information disseminated here is easily found on internet video websites and the like so feel free to use any keywords to educate yourselves if need be.

Back in the 20th century, about 1986 through 1987 Sacramento California hosted a couple of "street" contests. This was the time when "street" pros were perhaps a handful of guys, the rest being the vert guys who were watching the state of their style fall by the wayside. The Sacto events were a precursor to several arena-based "street" competitions and were underground and clandestine to a degree that made them interesting and vital.

Fast forward 20 years and the geniuses at REAL decided it was time for a redux. The "Sacto Rebate" as it is known, featured some replica elements from both the '86 and '87 events. A curvilinear s-curb, a spined inclined set of quarter pipes forming a doubled up diamond equivalent of the '87 original, and a hybridized version of the 86-87 car obstacle, enhanced by a huge hubba ledge and a kicker ramp. after the slightly repetitive nature of the single gap flights of the Girl set piece, the REAL "Sacto Rebate" had the promise of complete chaos. It delivered, or more precisely, the riders delivered. The Rebate also featured the return of big Ed Templeton, frontman for Toy Machine and disposable art hero. Ed lofted himself into nose blunts over the car and down the hubba ledge, landing on board but never quite rolling away cleanly, still it was pretty epic to see Ed charging like that. Other heads like Creature's Taylor Bingaman, REAL's Justin Brock, were also killing it with Justin sticking a backside 180 ollie over the entire car and well beyond it.

Zero's John Rattray is one of those guys that people might ask about, in that sort of way, "whatever happened to..." Nothing happened to him, he just operates below mass radar systems sometimes. John came out hard on the Creature obstacle, and stepped it up even more on the REAL deal. Short-cut ollies onto the car hood and out, 5-0's on the hubba and a lot of blunt and nosegrind madness up and over the spine diamond put John into 3rd place. In 2nd place Alex Olson utilized his quick feet and genetically enhanced style tendencies and brought out some serious madness. Alex brutalized the mini kicker as well as the car launch to log more air time than most everyone else. In the end, last year's overall top pro performer Rick McCrank was the obvious victor. Rick blazed through a series of innovative lines, using each piece of the REAL puzzle to his total advantage and his varied flights up and over the car/hubba combo reeled it in solidly for the win.

Tony Cervantes was looking like a favorite until a heavy slam took him out of the running and he needed to be helped out of the impact zone, but Tony will be back and his performance throughout the day was definitely impressive to say the least. At the end of time on the REAL obstacle, a fitting car destruction ritual got under way quickly, just reinforcing the retro nature and feel of the "Sacto Rebate". Not everything old is uncool, or so it seems. The final event was up next, and we'll have it for you here, along with the final standings and a rundown on the event in it's entirety.
