2007 Pool Party - What makes a legend?

Posted 04/17/2007 07:19:00 by i am vans

What goes in in this concrete coliseum is the stuff that legends are made of, without cgi monsters and special effects, without whopping 200 million dollar film budgets, without chariots, lions, and gladiators, and certainly not borrowed or adapted from any fantasy novel. Legendary makes for a fair enough description(when profanity cannot be used) and we'll use it here for the time being.

You see, no literary work of fiction could tell a story more riveting than the truth of what occurs during this one day of modern mayhem. Many of the best skateboarders this world has ever seen, past or present, arrive on this battlefield, prepared to give no quarter, accept no surrender, and leave no man standing. This is heavy metal, regardless of your musical contrivances. This is not controlled demolition, this is absolutely out of control cataclysm. A perfect soundtrack for the end of the world. And in this arena, whatever deals may have been struck with the devil suddenly become more costly. This not a rehearsed, carefully packaged for television occurrence, this is hell belching forth fire in the form of pure skateboarding anarchy and chaos.

If you were there last year, or you witnessed the video evidence, no re-telling of the story can enhance your own first-hand knowledge. If you happen to be a newcomer to this, then be prepared to have any expectations utterly destroyed. The 2006 Pool Party topped the "un-toppable" 2005 version. Everyone in attendance in 2005 agreed that nothing had ever gone down like that before, and that surely it was the pinnacle, the event by which all others would forever be measured. That is until May 18th, 2006. On that day, a capacity crowd, fueled with free food and enough free energy drink to drive an army into a frenzy, witnessed the impossible. No one thought 2005 could pale by comparison. No one thought that the combi pool could be abused harder in 2006. Everyone thought they had seen it all. No one, and everyone were both wrong, myself included in both categories. The 2006 Pool Party, in it's simplest form was a strict re-drawing of the line in the sand. If the term "Shock and Awe" hadn't been mis-appropriated by sinister government entities, you might insert that vernacular here. A drawing together of dark forces and unharnessed energies, an explosion of skateboarding destruction that is still echoing through space and time.

What is the reason for this? How is it that human beings can unleash this kind of annihilation simply by riding a non-powered rolling device? Certainly a bicycle race, a segway convention, or a roller derby doesn't even come close. A select grouping of widely varied elite skateboarders pushing themselves to the outer limits of human endurance is one part of the equation. Consider too, that all risk assessment is thrown out the window. Entertaining the idea of holding back to avoid a slam or a collision is a quick trip to the loser's bracket. From the fully armored lunatics to the padless, helmet-less crazies, every rider has the pedal smashed to the floorboard. NASCAR is a stagnant beauty pageant compared to the Pool Party.

So get ready. the stage is being set, the players are kicking it into overdrive and the darkness is approaching. Stay tuned for frequent updates, rumors, and all the reportage that we can muster. Will it be a barn-burner? Try a barn-nuker, if not more.

Out for the moment,
