The 2007 Vans Cup is a wrap! The superpipe went off today, as some of the heaviest halfpipe shredders in the world were competing for a boat load of prize money. The jam session format eased the nerves of many riders and it showed in the session, as they were boosting and going for broke knowing that if they didn’t put their trick down, they could get a free rebate to try it again.
The women kicked off in the morning, and Tricia Byrnes came out with some serious tricks like switch straight airs and McTwists, taking third. Burton uber-pro and Olympic medalist Kelly Clark was the crowd favorite, as she boosted herself into the second place spot. Her teammate Elena Hight was blasting some of the biggest airs of the day, and for her ripping abilities, she was awarded top honors in women’s halfpipe, taking home a sweet chunk of change.
The men's field was unbelievable, as practice looked more like the final of any other regular pipe contest. Iouri Todlotchokov, the Russian ruler threw down trick combos like back to back 1080's and grabbed the third place spot. Last year’s champion Antti Autti kept things simple until the end when he too busted out some serious back to back combos, mixing it up well, and taking the second place spot. Vans rider Danny Kass ended his weekend well, taking first place after his third place finish in slopestyle yesterday. Danny never repeated a run, and threw down an amazing variety of tricks that had the crowd cheering all day.
Well, it was a good weekend here at Northstar, and we’re already looking forward to the 2008 Vans Cup. If it is anything like this year, it promises to be the hottest contest on the West Coast. Hopefully, we'll see you next year. Until then, happy shredding!
