Alright, so SXSW is here and with the music portion of the festival kicking off for us Tuesday at House of Vans at The Mohawk, it’s time to prepare. What are your music festival essentials? Here are a few of our essentials that we carry around in our backpacks:
A comfy sweatshirt Texas weather is crazy temperamental this time of year and it can get really cold out of nowhere. A cute hat see previous sentence and swap cold for rain. Sunglasses, your iPhone & charger, a favorite camera, a good wallet (with cash! so many places are cash only) sunscreen, a water bottle, some emergen-c packets, a cool lanyard so you don’t lose all your credentials, and a notebook. Your phone is going to die, yes even with that charger so it’s always good to have some backup notes on locations, schedules, your friends phone numbers, etc.
On March 9th, 1997, we lost one of the Greatest rappers to ever grace the mic. Brooklyn artist Danielle Mastrion pays respect to the Notrious B.I.G. painting him in in his classic Gucci sun glasses and Coogi sweater. If you are in the Bushwick neighborhood in Brooklyn go to Troutman and St. Nicholas ave to see this in person Baby Baby!!
In episode 4 of “East Los” we meet Nekro. A true performer on and off stage, Nekro drives a s era hearse, has Frankenstein tattoos and sings and plays bass in the East L.A. band Proyecto Makabro. Pursuing his life-long quest to become a rock star, Nekro also shows a deep connection to his family, especially his grandmother. Watch as Vans and Director Angela Boatwright take you into the punk rock scene and back yard shows of “East Los”.
Kim Keever, a New York based artist is currently exhibiting his latest body of work entitled ‘Across the Volumes’. The abstract work puts drops of color industrial paint tints into 200 gallon fish tanks full of water. The effect? Explosions of beautiful color in the most abstract of shapes, some looking like a nuclear explosions. If you’re in New York City you can see these works in person at the Waterhouse and Dodd Gallery.
