In the "Pit of the Stomach" is the new album from We Were Promised Jetpacks. I don't have to tell you that they played a great set...More photos on Vans flickr.
Breathe Carolina closed out the day on our stage at the AP party. Kyle was hanging from the rafters in the ceiling half the time and everyone there was having a level seven dance party. It was rad. See more shots on our Flickr.
Here's a shot our friend Mitchell took of The Company We Keep during the AP Party here at SXSW. We saw so many rad bands this year, we've got photos pouring out of our ears still.
Cloud Nothings. Wow. Saw them for the first time last year at SXSW & thought they wouldn't be able to top their last release. Proved me wrong. Their new album 'Attack on Memory' is a rager.......
The Cancer Bats are busy dudes. They've got a new album coming out soon called Dead Set On Living, and they are on tour forever.... well, almost forever. Luckily they got some time to play our stage at the AP showcase and kill it. More photos of these guys on our Flickr.
We didn't get too many good shots of Lower Dens, but they're pretty awesome so you'll have to look them up. Make sure to check out their new video for "Brains." It's good looking & a slow burn.
Sleeping with Sirens also played our stage at the AP Party. These guys have a busy couple of months ahead with their current US tour going through April then they will be hitting the road with us for Warped Tour all summer. See more photos on our Flickr.
Are you kidding? This place was packed to the gills with more than 1,000 people. Built to Spill had people going nuts......
Titus Andronicus. You must see them live. They put one of the best shows going which is definitely why their fans are so in love with them. These guys were in my top 5 for the entire SXSW Festival. More photos...
Purity Ring are Megan James and Corin Roddick, a couple of youngin's who know their way around some beats. I'd suggest starting with their track, "Belispeak." More photos...
Dance your face off. New Build (members of LCD Soundsystem & Hot Chip have released their first album, "Yesterday was "Lived & Lost."
I couldn't believe what I was seeing on stage with Turquoise Jeep. I still don't. They are definitely a party. They have synchronized dance moves!
Intelligent & self-aware rap with a sense of humor. Fat Tony is one of my favorite new finds from this weekend. We got a ton of good photos of these guys. The rest of them are on Vans flickr.
Spycatcher played the AP Party at Red7 too. The band is a mash up of members from Cry For Silence & Gallows but have a totally different sound. You can check them out at one of their upcoming shows.
Starting of the day with White Arrows was definitely a bonus. These guys are nothing but synth-driven good vibes......
The Amity Affliction was one of a few bands that played on our stage at the AP Party at Red7 on Saturday. You can check out more photos from the whole show on our Flickr.
UK band Howler played a get show at Waterloo Records stage earlier this week. They're sorta garage. Kinda surf rock. Good tunes to drive around to, you know? Gotta clap your hands. Stream their album out on Rough Trade Records, America Give Up, on their site...
Gardens & Villa played at the Filter Magazine Culture Collide Party this weekend. Their label, Secretly Canadian, has four Gardens and Villa tracks for free download for your booty shaking pleasure. You can check out more photos on our Flickr.
Kaiser Chiefs played at the Cedar Street Courtyard for the Filter Showdown Party. Here are a few shots by our friend Enrique Fabela.
Girls was one of my favorite shows this year. It's seldom that I would go so far to say that a song in a show would be spectacular, but Girls nailed it with their performance of, ......
I didn't know so much metal blackness could come from central Florida. Now I do. We saw Trivium from this far away. There was no way to fight through that mess of a crowd.
A few people we liked at MWTX. Uh, oh. Someone's going to be updating their profile pics. More photos......
Andrea from Vans Mexico spent Friday at the Pitchfork day party and grabbed a bunch of photos of these guys, The War on Drugs, and all the other bands playing. Looked like a good time, kind of bummed I missed it. That's how it is at SXSW though, 763 shows going on at the same time. Tough life haha. P.S. "Taking the Farm" is the jam.
Another Pitchfork day party find was Mikal Cronin. I generally back anyone pulling off tie dye. This kid has been a collaborator with fellow garage SF-er, Ty Segall since he was in high school .
Japandroids played at the Pitchfork Day Party yesterday at Mohawk with a bunch of other awesome bands. Stay tuned for more photos from that, and check them all out on our Flickr. They have a new album coming soon on Polyvinyl.
One of the bands I was most excited to check out this year was The Men. I've been listening to their 2011 album 'Leave Home' non-stop for the last month. Yeah, I was slow on the draw, but now I'm in love. Heard songs from the new album "Open Your Heart" yesterday. These guys are solid. More photos on Vans flickr.
Walking into Clive bar last night I had no idea what to expect from MNDR but dangggggg. I don't really even know how to describe it except awesome. The whole line up for the Filter / Dance Right shin dig was pretty fantastic actually, nice job dudes.
Can't say that I get tired of seeing this band. Cults definitely do not disappoint......
We caught a bunch of bands at the Filter / Dance Right show last night at Clive bar. The place was a big hot mess for Grimes but we were so in love. More photos on our Flickr.
Bleached are so cute. They also sound really nice, and that's kind of important. This LA sister duo, Jennifer and Jessie Clavin formerly of Mika Miko, have pumped out three EPs since 2011. Can't wait for a full length from these girls with their straight-forward classic punk jams. Here's some photos of them from yesterday's Pitchfork show.
Youth Lagoon also played at the Pitchfork Day Party at Mohawk. The dreamy, far-off melodies of this Boise, Idaho kid, Trevor Powers, is a lot of fun. The sound is a bit wistful and a bit sad, I guess you could say. Definitely beautiful. Their 2011 release on Fat Possum, "The Year of Hibernation" is a must have in your library. More photos on Vans flickr.
Dance Party. Dance Party. Dance Party. Dance Party. That basically sums it up. Our friends Yacht killed it last night at Clive Bar for the Filter / Dance Right party. One of the most fun shows I have been to all week! More photos on our Flickr.
Sometimes when you see acoustic guitars walk up, you think it will be mellow. Not the case at all with Two Gallants. They left it all out there on the stage. Jesus. I felt like Adam Stevens heart was breaking in front of me. I vote yes. Besides. I'm a sucker for James Joyce. Nerd Alert. More on Vans flickr.
Yelle was only supposed to be doing a DJ set. Next thing you know Julie Budet is running out on stage to join the guys. Total surprise dance party! More on Vans flickr.
It's impressive if a band can pack a 1,700 capacity venue. It's even more impressive if you can pack that venue at 1pm on a Thursday. Chairlift put together an absolutely fun show......
Our buddy Oliver Peck is doing his Sailor Jerry thing at MWTX and tattooing folks like mad. Theophilus London got a nice new shark on his neck yesterday.
Best video evaaaarrrrr. #totallyeffingdestroying it over here.
This morning around1:00 AM my friend and I made our way into Barbarella which was insanely packed to try and catch Neon Indian. Apparently that venue has no photo pit so they're solution was to put us all on the tiny stage with the band... uhhhh, dance party!
We've seen a lot of rad shows over the last few days but I have to say this was definitely one of the top picks for me. Fiona Apple played at the Pitchfork showcase at an old church here in Austin so the sound was amazing and everyone was seated in a totally dark room of pews while she ran through a set of old and new songs... way different vibe than a normal SXSW show. Then there was the whole bit about the giant line and how I somehow made it inside just in time. Basically, it was awesome.
At the Hotel... ummm ok this is actually The Hotel Vegas. Whatever, you get the point... all these lovely people were hanging out this morning for the Brooklyn Vegan showcase waiting for Of Monsters & Men to go on. See more photos on our Flickr.
You can't really go anywhere in Austin during SXSW without meeting some rad people. Today I was making a haul across town to see some friends play and met these guys along the way. The girl on top of her bus invited me for a beer. I probably should have taken her up on it.
Okay, total new band crush on Of Monsters & Men. Caught their early set today at the Brooklyn Vegan Party at Hotel Vegas...They were so good people didn't even care how bad the weather sucked... seriously swamp-like sucked. Anyways they were AMAZE. Even more photos on our Flickr.
I've really been digging Pujol's album. I picked it up about a month ago. This kid has the best bio, "I MAKE ROCK AND ROLL RECORDINGS... I AM CURRENTLY PURSUING A MASTERS IN GLOBAL AFFAIRS THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER. I HAVE A RABBIT NAMED SPOOKY." Yes, all caps on his site. More Pujol on Vans Flickr.
Maps & Atlases played Hotel Vegan aka Hotel Vegas earlier today. Their new album 'Beware & Be Grateful' comes out April 17 in the US. More photos on Vans Flickr.
Mitchell was running around all day and took a ton of photos of some show goers he ran into. Here are a few favorites, the rest are on our Flickr.
Some more good shots from Thrasher's party at Scoot Inn last night. Everybody loves Thee Oh Sees.
Dirty Ghosts played last night at Scoot Inn and our friend Aaron Novak grabbed these photos for us. You can check out more on our Flickr.
I was introduced to Zach from The Freshkills about a year or so ago via our mutual friends in Ninjasonik. I'm not scared to get all goth & sad. Love it. More photos on Vans Flickr.
One of the raddest places in Austin is Scoot Inn. It's a little off the map but it's got skee ball so that's a win. Our friends at Thrasher threw a party there last night so here's some shots of Xray Eyeballs.
Our friend Mitchell headed over to the Warner Music Showcase last night to catch Santigold & Theophilus London, his photos made me so bummed I missed it. Looks like it was a total rager. Check out a ton more photos on our Flickr page.
One of the greatest things about Austin is the whole street scene. Everybody is all just hanging out like 'hey I'm having more fun than you.' I do have one new goal though, I gotta get a ride from Wonder Woman up there before I leave Austin.
A few more photos of Wavves for you from the Barbarian Group and Tumblr party. It was rad. Kool Keith has of course still got it. I mean that is one fricken cool dude. Not false advertising with the name. How is he gonna have that on his head & totally pull it off? Amazing.
We all made it down to the Mohawk/Club Deville for the Tumblr and Barbarian Group party last night. We caught sets from Kool Keith and Wavves and the weather was so nice and warm after days of pouring rain. Here's a shot of Wavves from our perch up on the balcony. Stoked to get the music portion of the festival underway, tons more to come.
We stumbled into this place with no idea a band was even playing. They’re a band from Northern Ireland called And So I Watched You From Afar. They sorta sound like Explosions in the Sky meet The Mars Volta.
At about 10:55 last night I got 472 text messages that I needed to run across town to see our old Warped Tour friends hellogoodbye play in a basement. Good thing I did, because I just made it as they started and ran into tons of our friends like Rob Dyer from Skate4Cancer, Erica & Luis from Keep-A-Breast, and a ton of other touring friends. Here's a shot of Forrest, hope to catch the guys play again this week.
There are about 1,790,752,754,090 happenings for your fantastic selves during SXSW, but clearly, you want to hang out with us the most. Here's the latest schedule of all Vans webcasts, shows, official & unofficial events, where we will be, height, weight, our favorite color......
MWTX is back in Austin again, and Vans is stoked to be a part of it. The MWTX party is free & all ages with RSVP for all 3 days. If you're not in Austin, here's the line up for the Vans + Stickam webcast......
Amanda Rae & our brand new intern Rachelle working on our SXSW Vans video yesterday. So pro...
Oh, Texas. How we love thee. Let me count the ways wiith 7 bands playing the Vans stage at AP Magazine's 100 Bands You Need to Know Party. It's free and open to all ages if you are in Austin. If you're not, we'll have a webcast for you. Here's the line up... ...
