The opening day of the 2011 Vans Pro Junior wrapped up Round 1 before diving into Round 2 and today's standout performances by the International field is a prime example of the high-level of competition expected to shine at this year's Vans Pro Junior. Peruvian Cristobal De Col was surgical with his wave selection, picking off two wedgy righthanders to detonate the day's highest scores, a 9.33 and an 8.33, with vicious backhand surfing. De Col is also surfing in the men's main event, the ASP 4-Star Vans Pro, and will definitely look to carry the confidence from his strong start through to the latter rounds of both divisions.
Also flaring today was South African darkhorse Michael February. The Cape Town local looked lively on both his forehand and backhand while belting several of the day's top scores amidst his first trip to Virginia Beach.
While International campaigners stood out on opening day of competition, ASP North America Pro Junior top seeds including Vans teamrider Andrew Doheny, defending ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion Evan Geiselman and current series leader Kolohe Andino will take to the water in the Round of 32 alongside several of the game's top up-and-coming talent.
In addition to the Vans Pro Junior the men's main event, the ASP 4-Star rated Vans Pro will see a ton of the world's best surfers hit the water at 1st Street Jetty including former ASP World Tour campaigners Nate Yeomans, Roy Powers, Nathaniel Curran, and Ben Bourgeois as well as Vans ripper Dylan Graves and Santa Cruz native Nat Young in addition to several other top names.
