Interview with Robert Williams (a little bit back in the day)

I'm not sure how old this interview is- maybe 15 years. However, this will make you want to have dinner with Williams if not for his artwork alone. His walk through Gary Panter's early work coupled with his justification on why he has to paint naked ladies is classic. (Don't watch it if you don't want to get hit with a few F-bombs.)

8 1/2 minutes with R. Crumb

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

This clip is taken from the 1994 documentary Crumb by Terry Zwigoff. There are great highlights in here including a funny moment with his wife, Aline. Note that in the first scene, Crumb is drawing the camera interviewing him.

Zap Comix: The Basics

Monday, November 9, 2009

One of the primary upcoming stories at Conveyor at Fred Segal will be Vans Vault & Zap Comix. What is Zap Comix? Basically, the reason why you can have your Shortcomings, Love & Rockets, or Jimmy Corrigan is because in 1968 Robert Crumb wanted to say what he wanted to say & draw what he wanted to draw. Crumb self-published the first issue of Zap Comix and sold it out of a baby stroller around Haight-Ashbury. One, two, skip-a-few and Zap was working out. In subsequent issues, Crumb invited artists S. Clay Wilson, Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, Robert Williams, Gilbert Shelton, and Spain Rodriguez to contribute. Zap is widely considered to have started the underground comix movement addressing social issues, sex, drugs - not your typical hero saving the world.
