since the turn of the millennium has burst onto the scene like Ryan Guettler
and no BMX rider in history has had a year like Guettler had in 2005. The US public got their first televised appearance of Ryan Guettler at the 2004 Global X games. Out of nowhere Ryan placed 3rd in Park behind Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist with many people saying he maybe should have got second. 2003 and 2004 went well with Ryan taking the Year-end King of Dirt title but even so, no one could have predicted what the following year would involve. The Dew Tour is the premier contest series for BMX, Skateboarding and FMX, with there being three BMX disciplines at each stop of the tour. Ryan rode in both Dirt and Street and ended taking the year-end titles in both. He made the finals in both classes at every event, ending up on the podium eight times and standing on top of it five. That also landed Ryan in excess of $200,000 in prize money and two Toyota trucks. Within 6 months Ryan had signed to ride for Dave Mirra’s new bike company MirraCo and moved his base from Huntington Beach CA to his new bosses hometown of Greenville North Carolina. 2006 was still an amazing year for Ryan but after an early season crash and concussion at the first stop of the Tour in June, it wasn’t until later in the year when “Goot” got back to winning ways at the Toyota Challenge in San Jose in September. Ryan has spent most of this last winter down under but stayed in the US long enough to pick up his “BMX Rider of the Year” award at the Fuel TV Action sports awards, even taking Vans TM Jerry Badders up on stage with him as he accepted his “fist”. Guettler has a busy contest schedule for this year and it will start early with comps in Australia and New Zealand in January and February before heading back and making an attempt at winning the Dew Cups back. In 2007, the gambler from Beenleigh Australia will be endorsing his own Pro model, the “Whip”. Look out for the ultra rare Aussie color combo’s in the stores; they may become collector’s items. |
